Grand Muster

Why the name change?
Because there are relatively few of us who do 1740 Spanish military!  Most of us have regular period civilian attire so when we travel to other events we fall in with the militia/civilians.  We want to be more inclusive and to encourage our other 18th century re-enactor friends from all over the United States to attend our event.  The military unit will be the St. Augustine Garrison and we're pretty small, however everyone else is welcome to attend as Spanish Militia (knowledge of Spanish language is not required), we may teach you the Spanish Musket drill if you plan to fire your musket.

What will we be doing?
We plan to have a combined military/civilian encampment set up in the Colonial Spanish Quarter. Please note that the consumption of alcohol will not be allowed in the CSQ with the exception of the Taberna Del Gallo of course!  Sutlers are welcome by prior arrangement as we will be having a Colonial Market day in the Quarter as well.

Friday Night 730-9PM:  In conjunction with the Castillo San Marcos, the St. Augustine Garrison will offer Torchlight Tours, simulating preparations for the night attack on Fort Mose which occurred on June 25th-26th 1740
"At 11 o’clock on the night of Saturday, June 25, I sent out from this garrison 300 men to make an attack on the fort of Mose, which was executed at day-break on Sunday morning. Our people swept over it, with such impetuosity that it fell with a loss of 68 dead and 34 prisoners. An Indian prisoner affirms positively that he saw Col. Palmer dead and his head cut off…The affair being terminated, I ordered the fort to be demolished and the dead buried."
A nominal fee will be charged by the Park Service to cover overtime wages.

Saturday 10AM-4PM:
We plan on having various presentations of Colonial life on a rotating schedule, such as cooking, spices and food preservation, the blunderbuss, a soldier's equipment, Fort Mose (our nation's first Free Black Settlement), celestial navigation, Indian scouts (Yemassee) among others.     Saturday evening at 8PM there will be the torchlight Parade through our city streets starting at the fort at 8PM, followed by a jollification at the Spanish Bakery.  Military Schedule available here (MS Word).

Where can I stay?
Camping will be available in designated locations in the CSQ.  Discounted overnight lodging is available at The Pirate Haus Inn.

Please check back often for updates!!
