The St Augustine Spanish Garrison is a group of re-enactors that portray the life and times of Spanish soldiers and their families in the Presidio de San Agustin in the period of 1740 to 1742. We are a unit of Florida Living History Inc., which was formed to foster an understanding of Florida’s history through programs, events, demonstrations, portrayals, and publications.  In 1977 the 1740 Spanish Garrison was established to portray life in colonial St Augustine. Since its inception, the Garrison has been involved in over 400 historic events, commemorative ceremonies, and battle re-enactments. The Garrison is especially proud of its involvement as the Honor Guard for the 2001 visit of the King and Queen of Spain, Juan Carlos I, and Queen Sofia, to St Augustine.

All members of the Garrison are volunteers. All uniforms, weapons, crafts, clothing, tools, and period items are provided by the members at their own expense. All period clothing has been meticulously researched for historical accuracy. Travel to and from most events, including lodging, in also paid for by the members themselves. Some events, such as those sponsored by municipal governments or private organizations, have been partially funded allowing for partial reimbursement for expenses. The vast majority of Garrison expenses are covered solely by the members.

Membership in the Garrison is open to men and women, at least 15 years of age. Those members, who wish to participate in black powder weapons demonstrations, must be certified by the National Park Service - Black Powder Program. Certification classes are offered twice a year, in the spring and fall, and cover both artillery (cannons) and smoothbore muskets. At all events involving weapons demonstrations, the Garrison observes all current NPS Black Powder Safety Regulations. All demonstrations are supervised by trained Garrison Officers, who have achieved their position through training, experience, and NPS Certification.

As a member of Florida Living History Inc., a 501c 3 non-profit educational organization, we are covered at all events by a comprehensive Liability Insurance Policy. Certificates of Insurance are available upon request.
